Painful Boils On Your Private Areas Causing Discomfort?
Often women can get boils (small pus-filled bumps) in and around their private parts and vaginal area. This usually occurs due to an infection of the hair follicle in the pubic area. These boils can be very painful and cause severe discomfort for the sufferer.
Boils generally heal on their own in a few days. But some home remedies might be useful to ease the pain and make it heal faster.
These Home Remedies Can Solve Your Problems!
- Warm washcloth- the first and foremost thing to avoid in case of a boil is pricking or prodding it. The boil should be allowed to heal naturally. But a way to hasten the process is to use a warm compress. You can soak a soft and clean washcloth in warm water, drain out the excess water and then place the lukewarm towel on the boil. This compress can be kept on for 6 to 10 minutes. But before placing your hands anywhere close to the affected area make sure to wash your hands with good antibacterial soap. This will prevent any further infections.
- Wear comfortable clothing – make sure to wear loose bottoms to ensure that there is no friction on the affected area. This will reduce discomfort and also speed up the natural healing process.
- Use antibiotic ointments – a payer of petroleum jelly over the area can protect it from rubbing against clothes and other surfaces. But in case of boil bursts then it is good to use an antibacterial ointment like neomycin or polymixin B (Neosporin is a common brand). While the boil heals you can take some low-grade painkillers to ease the discomfort. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen reduces pain as well as inflammation of the area.
- Treatment for a burst boil- sometimes a boil shrinks and dries and disappears. But sometimes the boil bursts and leaks out the pus and blood trapped inside it. In case that happens, it is essential to clean the area thoroughly and then put on a sterile bandage. Also, make sure to change the dressing and clean the area regularly.
When should you go to the doctor?
Boils usually heal on their own. But there can also be other more serious underlying reasons for vaginal boils which require serious treatment.
- It is essential to consult a doctor if the boil does not heal completely within two weeks
- Consult a doctor immediately if the boil is accompanied by fever, chills, or cold sweats
- A visit to the doctor is also necessary if the boil grows extremely rapidly or if it is larger than two inches
- Also, visit the doctor if the boil is extremely painful
- Multiple boils or boils that reoccur must also be treated by a medical professional
Medical treatment for boils in the private area is usually not very complicated. If the boil is very large the doctor might lance (cut it) and then drain the fluids of it so that it heals quickly. Otherwise, doctors usually treat boils with antibiotics. But it is essential to complete the entire dose of antibiotics to ensure that infections don’t reoccur. If the infection is very severe the doctor may suggest some tests to identify the specific bacteria causing the infection. Staph infections (by bacterium staphylococcus aureus) are a very common culprit in causing recurring boils.
How to prevent getting boils in the first place
Some common hygiene tips may be useful to avoid getting boils in your private areas.
- Shaving hygiene– when shaving your private areas make sure to use clean razors and change your razors at regular intervals. This will prevent in-grown hairs and infection of hair follicles.
- Correct shaving technique– always shave in the direction of your hair growth. Never shave dry skin. It is better to shave in the bath after taking a shower cause the skin is wet and smooth then. You can also use a gentle exfoliator on the areas that have been shaved so that there are no chances of in-growth of hair follicles.
- Don’t share personal hygiene items– never share your razors, towels, or other personal hygiene items with anyone else. This will reduce the chances of catching an infection from someone else.
Many people experience boils on their private parts. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. You can use some home remedies to reduce discomfort, but in case of any irregularities immediately consult a doctor and get the appropriate treatment.
