Trump also planned several decisions against China. “China has total control over the World Health Organization. We will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organization and directing those funds to other global public health charities.
The world is now suffering as a result of the malfeasance of the Chinese government,” Mr. Trump said in the White House Rose Garden.
“China has total control over WHO despite only paying $40 million a year compared to what the US has been paying which is approx $450 million a year. Because they have failed to make requested and needed reforms today, we will be terminating our relationship with WHO”, he added.
Trump tightened regulations: Does this make the world safe?
Trump tightened regulations against all Chinese investments and also announced that the US will end the special treatment of Hong Kong in response to the Chinese imposition of new controls. “The world needs answers from China,” Trump said in his aggressive speech. “Chinese officials ignored their reporting obligations to the World Health Organization and pressured the World Health Organization to mislead the world when the virus was first discovered by Chinese authorities.
Countless lives have been taken, and profound economic hardship has been inflicted all around the globe,” he said. “We must have transparency. Why is it that China shut off infected people from Wuhan to all other parts of China? It went nowhere else; it didn’t go to Beijing, it went nowhere else, but they allowed them to freely travel throughout the world, including Europe and the United States.
The death and destruction caused by this are incalculable,” he added. China criticized the US for the spread of the virus in the country. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Mr. Trump was trying to mislead the public, and smear China. But the American Medical Association said that the decision to cut ties with the WHO “serves no logical purpose and makes finding a way out of this public health crisis dramatically more challenging.
This senseless action will have significant, harmful repercussions now and far beyond this perilous moment, particularly as the WHO is leading worldwide vaccine development and drug trials to combat the pandemic. COVID-19 affects us all and does not respect borders; defeating it requires the entire world working together.” The President has criticized the WHO for several weeks and threatened them.
Experts say that Trump’s administration also faulted and delayed Coronavirus testing and this threatening towards WHO doesn’t do any good to the US.
“Just at a time when we need unity at the World Health Organization, the president of the United States has thrown a hand grenade in the middle of a pandemic. the move would make Americans and the world less safe,” Lawrence Gostin, a global health law professor at Georgetown University who has served on various WHO expert advisory committees, said.
