California Governer Ordered People To Wear Mask

As social distancing is not practically possible, California governers ordered people to wear masks while they are both indoor and outdoor. Thursday, the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom issued a statewide order on this. He announced that citizens now must cover their mouths and nose in most indoor settings and outdoors when social distancing isn’t possible.

He also gave some exemptions for children, the hearing impaired, and those with medical conditions. “Science shows that face coverings and masks work. They are critical to keeping those who are around you safe, keeping businesses open, and restarting our economy,” Newsom said in the order. It was necessary because too many people have started to venture out in public with their faces uncovered. But the governor’s order does not contain any clarifications about how the state plans to enforce the requirement or whether someone could be fined for not complying.

States like NewYork and Michigan have already passed the orders requiring masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The indoor public settings mentioned in the Newsome’s order include public transportations and offices. In California, people can now shop, dine in at restaurants, get their hair done, and go to church, among other things. Los Angeles, which has seen more than 3,000 deaths from COVID-19, planned Friday to allow the reopening of nail salons, massage parlors, tattoo parlors, bars, wineries, card rooms. Racetracks can operate but without spectators. 

Are Cases Increasing due to the Relaxation in Restrictions? 

Now the reports show that the COVID-19 cases are increasing and even doubling. Experts opinioned that this is due to the relaxation is given for the restrictions. In California, more than 3400 infected people are hospitalized on Wednesday. Officials reported this as a record-high single-day increase in cases as more people get tested. This is the main cause behind the state order. It requires people to wear masks when inside or in line for any indoor public spaces, in health care settings like hospitals and pharmacies, while waiting for or riding public transportation, and in outdoor spaces where it’s not possible to stay six feet or 1.8 meters apart from others.

The governor said that he issued the order because too many people are going out in public without face coverings as businesses, restaurants and other sectors of the economy reopen. N95 masks or handmade varieties are considered a reliable defensive measure against the spread of coronavirus as they prevent those infected from spreading the virus through droplets exiting their mouth and nose. The mask directive orders in the states like Florida and North Carolina have been met with resistance ranging from protests to mask-burning events. Masks are a critical tool in restarting the economy safely and should not be imbued with political significance. But many criticism gave after governor’s order.

Republican Assemblyman James Gallagher said, “let locals decide and Newsome is routinely changing his mind on who sets virus-related rules. The governor can’t seem to make up his mind if counties can govern themselves during this pandemic. Perhaps if his guidance was more clear, Californians would be better prepared to meet this moment.”

Even though, the state government is believing that enough Californians are going to see this recommendation and carry it out, and it’s going to allow them to put a barrier in virus transmission.
