Loss of tissues in gums is more worrying as gum tissues do not grow back. A recessed gum exposes the root area of teeth. A dental surgeon grows back gum tissue by grafting tissue on the affected area from other parts. With age, the gum recedes as gum loses gum tissues. Other causes of receding gums can be gum disease like gingivitis. Poor oral health and frequent oral diseases also cause fast recess of gum tissues.

Address dry mouth problem

In dry mouth illness, the ability of salivary glands to secrete saliva is impaired. There is a feeling of insufficient wetness of the mouth in this condition. The saliva in the mouth apart from aiding in the digestion of food also takes care of gums and tissues. If your mouth is not secreting enough saliva, gum health can suffer. The saliva reaches between teeth and washes the gum. Saliva is a natural antibacterial agent that prevents bacterial diseases in the mouth. The mouth needs to have adequate saliva levels at all times. 

It is important to seek medical advice to treat dry mouth illness without delay.

Rinse your mouth after every meal

People have a number of meals during the day and some mini meals in between. While on the go or at work we can most often miss rinsing our mouth. After every meal, it is a good practice to visit the washroom and rinse the mouth thoroughly with clean drinking water. It is especially important to rinse the mouth of sugar juice after consuming sweet foods and drinks as sugar solution creates a conducive environment for microbe growth. For a proper rinse swish around the water eight to ten times in the mouth and then discard out gently. No need for forceful spit. A mild herbal mouthwash can be mixed with water for every rinse.

Brush teeth twice daily

Teeth should be brushed twice daily with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste. Rigorous brushing hurts the gum tissues at the edges and causes their loss. Brushing action should be conducted with care in a slow round motion. Two minutes of brushing twice a day are sufficient.

Floss your teeth

Flossing helps take out the tiny particles that get lodged between teeth. Food particles attract microbes and increase oral disease risk. Teeth can be flossed with tooth floss available in medical stores or with wood tooth pricks.

Guard against microbes

Dental consultation should be sought without delay if suspicious spots are observed on teeth as these can be microbe growth. After taking a seat the microbes first attack the gums and eat away into the gum tissue. Stomach problems can give rise to mouth ulcers which also serve as a seat for microbe growth. It is important to be cautious about microbe attacks in any part of the mouth as the microbes soon spread to gums.

Avoid stress on gums

Stress on gums should be avoided. Food should be placed in the mouth in small bites. Foods that are too hard should not be consumed. Apples and guava too hard to bite into can always be cut into small pieces using a knife. Trying to chew down very hard food causes unnecessary exertion of gums and abrasion of gum tissue lining. Human teeth and gum are delicate in comparison to other animals. It is ideal for chewing cooked food and few raw foods. Action like peeling sugarcane with teeth should never be encouraged. 

Follow healthy habits

A healthy diet and exercise regimen delays the aging process of the body and gums. A diet rich in vitamins is good for gums. Too much cholesterol in the diet can affect gums and make them slack so that they tend to lose grip on teeth. Smoking should be avoided as nicotine in tobacco has adverse effects on teeth and gum.

Go for regular dental checkups 

A regular visit to the dentist is recommended every six months. The dentist performs a thorough oral check for cavities, the presence of microbes, and other unwanted elements in the mouth during regular checkups. Cleaning teeth by the dentist during regular visits improves oral health and increases the life of teeth and gums. Sometimes with age or due to trauma teeth get misaligned. Chewing with misaligned teeth causes extra stress to gums and abrasion of gum lining. With the help of dental processes, teeth alignment can be corrected.
